Fashion Week Leaves the Runway: Why Churches and Warehouses Are the New Show Venues

For decades, the fashion show venue was largely a formality, a tent, a hall, a rented space with good lighting and enough seats for editors and buyers. The clothes did the talking; the room was just where it happened. That arrangement is quietly falling apart. Across Tokyo, Paris, Copenhagen, and New York, designers are increasingly staging collections inside churches, haunted houses, converted warehouses, and landmark buildings never intended for fashion at all, treating the venue not as a backdrop but as an extension of the collection itself.

Tokyo’s FW26 Season Made the Case Most Vividly

Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo’s Fall/Winter 2026 season, marking the event’s twentieth anniversary, offered maybe the clearest recent illustration of this shift in action. Designer Mikio Sakabe staged his “Forgotten” collection inside an actual haunted house, blurring the line between runway presentation and horror set piece, while VIVIANO showed its glamorous “Portrait of Her, Unnamed” collection inside Yodobashi Church in Shin-Okubo. Elsewhere across the same week, shows unfolded inside a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed school in Ikebukuro, designers treating each unconventional space as something the collection responded to directly rather than simply occupied. The event’s own framing for the season, “something so new, even the future doesn’t see it coming,” captured the underlying instinct: venue as narrative device, not neutral container.

Copenhagen Built Its Whole Identity Around This Shift

Copenhagen Fashion Week has arguably gone furthest in institutionalising the trend rather than treating it as occasional novelty. Coverage of recent seasons describes shows running in old warehouses and glass atriums, spaces chosen specifically because they make sense for the collection being shown, paired with a compressed, no-theatrics format, fifteen-minute shows, punctual start times, none of the extended waits associated with traditional fashion week production. Brands including Ganni, Stine Goya, and (di)vision have become closely associated with this approach, and the venues themselves have become inseparable from Copenhagen’s broader reputation for sustainability-minded, relatively unpretentious fashion, industrial, honest spaces matching an industrial, honest design ethos.

Paris Is Adapting Without Abandoning Its Icons

Paris presents a more layered version of the same shift. Established houses still return to recognisable anchors, Dior and Saint Laurent frequently at the Tuileries, Valentino often at the Grand Palais, but the city’s broader fashion week ecosystem has expanded dramatically around them. Showroom operators in Paris now curate close to nine hundred available spaces for shows and presentations each season, private mansions in the Marais, industrial lofts in the 11th arrondissement, contemporary white-cube galleries, alongside historic public squares occasionally transformed into cinematic runway settings near landmarks like the Pont-Neuf. The scale of that inventory tells its own story: unconventional, characterful venues have become infrastructure that fashion week organisers actively compete to book, not an occasional creative flourish.

Why This Is Happening Now

Several forces are converging to drive this shift simultaneously. Social media has fundamentally changed what a fashion show needs to deliver, a striking, photographable setting extends a show’s reach and shelf life well past the runway walk itself, generating coverage and engagement a standard tent simply can’t match. There’s also a growing appetite among younger, independent designers specifically to distinguish their shows from the corporate uniformity of traditional venue formats, an unconventional space signals creative intent before a single garment even appears. And there’s a practical dimension too, cities like New York now spread fashion week across dozens of distinct venues rather than a single centralised location, partly a response to how expensive and logistically rigid traditional show production has become, and partly a genuine embrace of variety as a feature rather than a compromise.

What This Means for the Fashion Show as a Format

The venue shift reflects something bigger than aesthetic preference, it’s a redefinition of what a fashion show is actually for. A show staged in a church, a warehouse, or a haunted house isn’t simply presenting clothes, it’s constructing an atmosphere the collection has to hold its own within, raising the creative stakes for designers while giving audiences and photographers something considerably more memorable than rows of identical folding chairs under a tent. As fashion weeks in Tokyo, Copenhagen, Paris, and beyond continue leaning into this approach, the traditional runway venue looks increasingly like a relic of an era when the show was simply a delivery mechanism for the clothes, rather than a creative statement in its own right.
